About this event

A portion of each ticket sold will go to Ukraine Relief Aid

Overnight Sound: A Sonic Slumber Party highlights modern sonic arts, running all night, from Saturday evening at 6pm until Sunday morning at 8 am, with the hours from 1am - 6 am programmed with music for sleep. Throughout the night guests can listen for as long as they’d like, coming and going while respecting the rarefied space. During Overnight Sound more than 20+ artists and musicians will present 12+ hours of continuous sonic textures both electronic and acoustic, creating a space where the listener gets lost in time, much like a meditation. Like a dreamer succumbing to a dream, the listener - immersed in ever-changing sound - readjusts their consciousness and gains a new perception into the expansiveness of time.

Overnight Sound is presented by Pamela Martinez / Teletextile and The Listener’s Gallery, UTSA’s MuTeFest, directed by Andrew Bergmann, Associate Professor in Music Technology at UTSA, for Contemporary Art Month (CAM).

Martinez–a long-time resident of Brooklyn NY before returning to San Antonio– is well known for her Sound Bath Meditations. During a sound bath, one often falls into the brain state between wake and sleep. Having led people in this experience one hour at a time, Martinez thought ‘why not do it all night long?’ and thus the idea for Overnight Sound was formed. Overnight Sound has also been partly inspired by the internationally-famous Drone Fest in Hudson, NY, at which Pamela Martinez led a Reiki team to serve 150 people during the 24-hour performance.

Overnight Sound doubles as the kick-off event for MuTeFest 5, UTSA’s yearly music technology festival. MuTe is UTSA’s student music tech organization, celebrating sonic textures and collaborative tech explorations with innovative seminars and creative interludes. Check their website for the festival details: Mutemusic.org.

Performers in Overnight Sound include sound artists, composers, and instrumentalists from central Texas, California, and beyond. The San Antonio Ambient Orchestra will fill in the seams as the evening evolves through ambient instrumentals and experimental electronics. Guests are invited to bring their own blankets, pillows, sleeping bags, bean bag chairs. Some snacks and beverages will be provided. We encourage bringing refillable water bottles and mugs for tea and coffee. We are excited to share this unique experience with the community.

You may be asked to leave if making anyone uncomfortable, so thank you for being a good guest. We will have seating for those who want to come and enjoy the night for a few hours, but we also encourage guests to bring a sleeping bag, pillows, blankets and bean bags to set up for a middle school lock-in feel.
